What is the purpose of Roskilde University?

Research and education are Roskilde University's most important contributions to a sustainable development of society. The development requires a high level of mobilisation and partnership. Due to our history and experience with collaboration and co-creation Roskilde University has an important role to play.

Therefore, over the next ten years, we will lift our responsibility and commitment to being the 'university in the real world' by sharpening and further developing an infrastructure that supports sustainable development, where research, education and collaboration work closely together.

Vision

Roskilde University will be a European front-runner in interdisciplinary knowledge creation that is locally embedded and globally connected and will be recognised for its contribution to research-based sustainable change.

Headlines and Benchmarks of the Strategy

The strategy has four main headings, unfolding in a series of benchmarks that are mutually dependent and affect each other.

Cutting-edge interdisciplinary research

• We conduct cutting-edge research at the highest international level and our goal is to develop a distinct interdisciplinary profile based on the social sciences and humanities, combined with key contributions from natural, technical and health sciences.
• Our research is excellent and challenge-driven, and shall contribute to sustainable development in close interaction with the surrounding community, both locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
• Our societal impact must always be based on fundamental principles of freedom of research, research integrity and open science.
• We must be an international hub for critical interdisciplinary research.
• Our aim is to offer coherent time for research, well-functioning research organisation and robust administrative research support.

Problem-oriented and problem-led programmes

• Our degree programmes provide students with broad interdisciplinary and methodological competencies. The programmes foster digital, ethical and democratic development, conflict resolution and empowerment.
• Our programmes must provide deep interdisciplinary engagement, where students and researchers work together to put the research and its methods into practice.
• Our programmes must attract enthusiastic Danish and international students, who are committed to developing a sustainable future.
• The teachers must master and develop Roskilde University's pedagogical model, Problem-oriented Project Learning (PPL), so that the students can apply this approach in their studies and professional academic work.
• Roskilde University's ambition is to contribute to lifelong learning by collaborating with the labour market to offer the continuing and further education of the future.

Environmental, economic and social sustainability

• We strive to be a pioneering university for sustainable institutional and campus operations, where economic, social and environmental considerations are always part of the university's long-term priorities.
• Our campus is a vibrant research, study and work environment, where students, employees, alumni and external partners thrive and can combine their academic strengths and interests.
• We will ensure real equality and diversity in relation to fellowship and cooperation and in relation to attracting and retaining employees and students.
• We will promote a responsible, critical and competent use of GenAI that contributes to realising the technology's potential in research, learning and administration.

Co-creators of societal change

• Our researchers and research communities must contribute to societal change and to developing the role of the universities in society through research dissemination, open innovation and citizen science.
• Our graduates must be academically strong agents of change and competent project managers, who are capable of converting knowledge into development in the established labour market, and as independent entrepreneurs and opinion leaders.
• Our employees and administrative units must support collaborative relationships with respect to research and education, international alliances and local and regional partnerships.
• Our research and education shall contribute to co-creation and sustainable development in the Zealand region.
